No Surprises Act & Medical Billing Protections
Last updated: August 20, 2026
Under the federal No Surprises Act, you are protected from unexpected, or "surprise," medical bills in certain situations. This page explains your rights and protections regarding balance billing and provides information on how to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before treatment.
1. Your Billing Rights
When you receive emergency care, or are treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network facility, federal law protects you from "balance billing," meaning the provider cannot bill you for the difference between what they charge and the amount your health plan agrees to pay, beyond your normal in-network cost-sharing (copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles).
These protections apply to certain emergency services and certain services provided by out-of-network providers at in-network facilities. They generally do not apply to routine, scheduled outpatient chiropractic and rehabilitative care obtained directly from our office, where you choose your provider in advance.
2. Right to a Good Faith Estimate
If you do not have insurance, or you are not planning to use your insurance for your visit, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before you receive care.
You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service, or any time you request it.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill.
